Nancy Hatch Dupree and the staff of ACKU and ABLE create a new library at Humayan Shahid School, Dasht-e Barchi, about one hour from central Kabul. This is the first time the 8,000 students at this school have had a library.

Nancy Hatch Dupree and the ACKU staff visit the provincial council in Parwin Province to speak with local officials about the pilot ACKU library program. At the moment the council does not have a copy of the Afghan constitution or any relevant books or materials to assist in governing the local population. The Parwin provincial council will be the first council in Afghanistan to have a library.
