New ACKU Facility Opens March 27, 2013

03-26-2013

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Founder Nancy Hatch Dupree, Executive Director Abdul Waheed Wafa and all the staff of the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU), the new home of ACKU's extensive collection and program offices is scheduled to open officially on March 27, 2013.

The brand new ACKU facility will serve as a place for research, collaboration and explo ation of issues relating to Afghan history and culture. With its gallery, reading and conference space that harken to traditional Afghan architecture within a state-of-the-art facility, ACKU will be a focal point in Kabul and further ACKU's mission of nation-building.

The gorgeous new home of ACKU could not have come to fruition without the generous financial support of the Afghan Government, the United States Agency for International Development, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, The Asia Foundation, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and the many individuals who provided gifts to ACKU through the Dupree Foundation.

The UA News, an online newsletter of the University of Arizona, features an article about an ongoing project of the University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) and the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU) to digitize and make widely available the material archived at ACKU. The team at UAL is led by Atifa Rawan, who was born and raised in Afghanistan, and Yan Han, who are working closely with ACKU staff. They have launched a website, Preserving and Creating Access to Unique Afghan Records, that houses the  3,500 digital documents that are available to date.
